Laundry FAQ

Have you ever wondered what those foreign laundry symbols mean on the tags of your clothing?
Maybe you’ve found yourself staring at the shelves in the grocery store reading bottle after bottle of laundry soap trying to decide which soap is best for your washing machine.
Well wonder no more. This Laundry FAQ post will walk you through the ins and outs of the laundry world and leave you wishing you had a load or two that needed to be washed right now.

Laundry FAQ
Laundry FAQ

What Do These Cryptic Laundry Symbols Mean?

If you have ever taken a close look at the tags on your clothing, you’ll notice most come with symbols on them.
No need to worry, these are not some type of alien writings, they are simply an easy way to know at a glance how to safely launder your garments.
One of the basic symbols is one that looks like a wash tub with water in it. Inside you will see a temperature; this represents the best water temperature to use when washing the garment.
Another symbol looks like a triangle with lines in it. This symbol lets you know to use only non-chlorine bleach on the item.
If you see a square with a circle in it, check the number of dots inside the circle. This represents the suggested drying temperature for the garment; one dot meaning low heat while two dots represents medium heat. Do not iron articles of clothing that have an iron with an X over it on the tag. This means this particular item is not meant to be ironed.

Which Soap Is Best?

When it comes to laundry soap, all soaps are not created equal.
The first and probably most important aspect of laundry soap you want to consider is whether or not it is regular soap or HE.
Laundry soap that is marked HE, or high efficiency, is meant to be used by newer, more environmentally friendly washing machines that use less water than traditional machines.
Generally speaking, you can get away with using HE soap in a traditional washing machine, but you cannot use regular laundry soap in an HE machine. Doing so may fill your laundry room with suds. These excess suds can also burn up the pump in the washing machine and cause a soap build up that can damage the machine as well.
Play it safe and pass your extra regular laundry soap on to a neighbor when purchasing a new high efficiency washing machine.

Will My Clothes Get Clean If I Wash Them In Cold Water?

There are two main reasons people choose to wash their clothes in cold water; one is to keep them from fading and the other is to conserve energy by not having to heat the water.
We’ve been told since we were kids that we needed to bathe in hot water in order to “kill the germs”, so how then is it effective to wash our dirty laundry in cold water?
Given the fact that our washing machines these days are so advanced and that laundry soap manufacturers have developed soaps that are specifically designed for cold water washing, having to use hot water to clean laundry is quickly becoming a thing of the past. This is true especially when you consider that using cold water rather than hot to run laundry can save the average household close to $40 a year in energy costs. When you wash your clothes in a laundromat, make sure that you also verify the machine’s settings on this.

What Is The Best Way To Keep My Whites Bright?

Clothes, over time, may naturally become dull and yellowed a bit, however, there are ways to brighten up dingy-looking whites. First, try using an oxygen-based bleach mixed with warm water. Soak your garments over night in this solution and then wash normally the next day. You can even add about a half of a cup of distilled vinegar to the rinse water if you like.
If this technique doesn’t work, you can add a bit of bluing to your white load. If you have never used bluing before, be sure to read the directions carefully and follow them to the letter.
If all else fails, you can opt for using a chlorine bleach, but be very careful to check your labels for any bleach laundry symbols to make sure your garment won’t be damaged by adding bleach.

Broken Washing Machine ?

You got broken washing machine, too?

Washing Machines and Dryers are one of the most heavily used appliance in most of the households. Due to this, these machines are not vulnerable on usual wear and tear and may break from time to time. We have one in our home and I only found that our washing machine is broken, when it ripped my favorite blouse šŸ™Ā  and some other clothes thatĀ  have been laundered. The next episode is when soap suds started to leak on the floor.

Broken Washing Machine
Broken Washing Machine

So basically, our washing machine have gotten its early retirement, leaving me with no option rather than to haul the piles of laundry to the coin laundromat near me. Of course, apart from the longer-term plan of purchasing a new one, or having it repaired – i still need to wash the clothes on the interim.

If you have never used a laundromat, below pointers could be handy as it will help familiarize on what to expect when you finally decided to bring over your laundry to the laundromat.

Step 1: Presort your laundry before you take it to the laundry mat, place the clothes in laundry baskets or trash bags for easy transport.

Step 2: What to bring?
Laundry detergent (your favorite and best smelling).
Laundry scent beads (a necessity if you don’t want your clothes coming out with a funky smell).
Shout Color Catchers (if you need to combine loads in order to make sure you have a full one this is the tool for you).
Hangers for drying any non-dryer friendly clothes (like sweaters) as well as for immediately hanging any clothes that need to be hung up after washing.
Many people choose to stay during the hour or so wait that it takes for a load of laundry to complete a wash cycle, but still others will start the laundry and go nearby to run other errands or to grab lunch or dinner. The safest route is to stay put, as laundromats maintain a strict no liability claim to the safety of your clothes. If you choose to stick around to make sure your clothes are safe be sure to bring something to do either a book to read, a computer to play on (many laundromats provide free wifi), or a smart phone to play games on. Also, bring a snack or extra cash to purchase one.

Step 3: Questions to call and ask your laundromat

Do they take quarters or use a card system? Many laundry mats are moving over to a card system, which allows you to use your credit card, or cash to place money on a plastic pay card that you slide into the machine to activate it.
What sizes are their machines and how much do they cost?
The majority of laundromats have multiple sizes of washers including some washers that can hold up to six regular loads of laundry.
When is their last wash? You do not want to get caught last minute at the machine and forced to return home with wet clothes.

Step 4:
Quarters: To be prepared, ask the laundromat nearby if they have coin changer available on site. Most of the laundromats do, and the coin changers will usually change bills to quarters.
Otherwise, you can stop by your local bank, food, or drug store. It is recommended you go in with at least two rolls of quarters. It is important to bring the quarters with you as sometimes the change machines are out of order from frequent use and or the machines will not take your cash, better to save yourself the headache and just go in prepared.

Cards:
Load your machines prior to purchasing a card, this gives you a better idea of how much you will need to put on the card. Whatever you do, do not start one load and wait for the first load to be done, before placing in the second load. The beauty of a laundromat is you can have multiple loads going at one time whether that is two, five or, twelve.

Step 5: Your clothes are washed and now it is time to put them in the dryer. How long do they stay in there? Well it really depends on the type of dryer if the dryers are run by electricity it is safe to say about 25 or 30 minutes is ideal for an average load. Larger loads may need anywhere from 30 to 35 minutes. If they are using the old school gas dryers typically noted by the dancing flames that can often be seen behind the top part of the dryers grill then a regular load may only need about 15 minutes on high and 20 or 25 minutes on medium. You should never need more than a full 30 minutes from a gas dryer.

Finally, do not be afraid to ask the attendant for help and take the time to fold your laundry following its removal from the dryer it will make the transition hope that much easier. Also if the clothes are already folded when you get home all you will need to do is put them away. This will also help prevent any unwanted wrinkling.

How To Use A Coin Laundry

With the cost of Hydro and Gas on the rise and plummeting, it is so common that an average household nowadays, consider washing their clothes at a Coin Laundromat to save on their utility bills and also their valuable time.

how to use a coin laundry
How To Use a Coin Laundry

Coin laundry, also known as laundromat, is laundry facility wherein people pay to use washing machines and dryers to wash or launder their clothes. The business gets its name from the fact that it is operated by use of a coin just like a typical Vending machine. Now the business owner could decide to have it on small scale level, whereby people just come in and launder the clothes themselves, or he/she could decide to expand the business and include dry cleaning. The main difference from the regular washing machines is that they are coin operated.

In some of these facilities, you will find few or no employees at all. The employees come in once in a while to ensure that the machines are in order and also to empty the coins from the machine. In such cases, the machines are fitted with gadgets to convert bills into coins. Other facilities prefer to have employees attending to the clients personally. Most people prefer this as opposed to the unattended machines. This is because they can get assistance if they get stuck. It also diminishes the chances of theft. The price charged depends on the business policy and also the quality of machines. On top of this coin laundry also make money by selling laundry products too. These can be purchased by inserting coins into the machine.

Since you, as the customer, will be required to do the laundry yourself, it is essential that you know how to do it, and do it right.

Here are some four simple steps to follow on how to use a coin laundry machine.

1. To begin with, check that the washing machine or dryer don’ t have any articles or clothes left by the previous user. Check if it’s clean and wipe or clean first before using.
2. The next thing to do is sort your clothes and put your clothes separately as you put then into the machines. You could sort by whites, colors, bulk or large items like towels, etc. You could also opt to use a mesh bag to put smaller delicates like bra’s etc.. so that they don’t tangle with the rest of your laundry.
3. After this, set the Cycle Specification .This can be done by operating the buttons or knobs that are found at the front of the machine. The specifications are in term of either cold, warm or hot water. You can also determine the pace of the cycle.
4. Put on soap. For some machines there are options for pre-wash powder or liquid detergents, bleach and softeners.
5. Insert coins into the allocated coin slot. Do not use paper money. If you do not have coins ensure that you first convert the bills into coins first.
4. Finally, close the cover of the machine press Start.

Give it adequate time to complete the entire cycle. Usually washers took around 30mins to complete, depends on the size used.

There are several advantages where a household could leverage in using the Coin Laundromat as compared to using the traditional washing machine at home:

1. It conserves water. Regular washing machines will use about 120 quarts of water (30 gallons) for every round. Commercial coin laundry machines on the other hand use about half of this amount.
2. This commercial machines are big enough to hold large amounts of laundry and this takes a much shorter time as compared to using a small washing machine.
3. Most of this facilities have attendants on standby in case you encounter a persistent stain.
4. When you do the laundry you avoid clothes mix up and actually get to do your laundry exactly as you like it.
